The piece

Katana by Suishinshi Masahide, signed Amahide at the age of 72 and dated Bunsei 3 (1820), with an ubu tang, in shirasaya and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers.

Katana by Suishinshi Masahide, the Musashi smith who, according to the original seller, championed a return to the old forging methods, published his technique in a dozen books and trained more than a hundred pupils, Naotane among them. In his final years he signed Amahide, and this blade, from 1820, is a work of his old age; the original seller describes it as a copy of Kagemitsu's kataochi gunome. It measures 69.8 cm in nagasa with 1.6 cm of sori: shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune and chū-kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame mixed with itame, with thick ji-nie and fine chikei, and the hamon a kataochi-style gunome with ko-gunome, ko-chōji and togari-ba, plentiful ashi and nioi-deki with ko-nie; the bōshi runs in midare and ends in komaru. The photographs show that gunome with its ashi. The tang is ubu, with kurijiri, sujikai keshō yasurime and a single mekugi-ana; the omote bears the signature 七十二翁天秀 (Shichijūni-ō Amahide) and a stamped seal, and the ura the date 文政三年八月日 (Bunsei sannen hachigatsu hi). It is kept in shirasaya with a double silver habaki and has no mounting. The NBTHK certified it Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken in 2013.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
