Shinshintō katana by Nankai Tarō Tomotaka of Tosa, signed and dated 1846, with an ubu tang and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Katana by Nankai Tarō Tomotaka, a shinshintō smith from Tosa province. According to the original seller, he was born in Kuroiwa, Takaoka district, first worked as a saw maker and turned to sword making in Bunka 15; he trained under Iga no Kami Kinmichi in Kyoto and Suishinshi Masahide in Edo, set up on his own in Edo during the Tenpō era, took on many pupils and wrote several treatises on swords. The blade, in shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune and a narrow mihaba, has a nagasa of 63.7 cm and a sori of 2.0 cm. The original seller describes an itame jigane mixed with mokume and thick ji-nie, and a hamon that starts in notare at the base with a sudare-ba pattern above it in the manner of Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, with a straight bōshi turning back in komaru. The tang is ubu, with a kurijiri tip, kiri yasurime and one mekugi-ana; it is signed on the omote 南海太郎朝尊 (Nankai Tarō Tomotaka) and dated on the ura 弘化三年四月吉日 (Kōka sannen shigatsu kichijitsu), alongside a second line of inscription. It carries NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers issued in 2020 and is published in volume 3 of the Shinshintō Taikan. According to the original seller, it is kept in shirasaya with a one-piece silver-foiled habaki; it has no mounting.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
