The piece

Katana of 1785 signed Taira Masayoshi, the Satsuma smith who later signed Hōki no Kami Masayuki, designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK. Ubu tang, 86.5 cm nagasa, in shirasaya.

Katana by Taira Masayoshi, the Satsuma smith who received the title Hōki no Kami in 1789 and thereafter signed Masayuki; together with Oku Motohira, the leading figure of Satsuma shinshintō. According to the paper, he was the third of his line and the son of the second Masayoshi. The blade, 86.5 cm in nagasa with 2.1 cm of sori, is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, broad (3.5 cm at the base and 2.6 cm at the tip), thick, with a deep koshizori and an ō-kissaki. According to the original seller and the paper, the jigane is itame mixed with mokume and nagare, with thick jinie and frequent chikei; the hamon, notare-based with gunome and pointed gunome, shows ashi, a deep nioi, thick nie, kinsuji, nie-suji and sunagashi. The tang is ubu with two mekugi-ana: the omote bears the signature 薩摩官工秩父末葉平正良 (Satsuma kankō Chichibu matsuyō Taira Masayoshi) and the ura the date 天明五年巳八月 (Tenmei go-nen mi hachigatsu) with a commission inscription. The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōken at its 63rd session (17 November 2017), and the paper's commentary regards it as the smith's masterpiece for its size and power. It comes in shirasaya, without mounts.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
