The piece
Iron tate-maru tsuba showing the meeting of a shiokumi and a woodcutter, in takabori with gold, silver and shakudō inlay; signed 鐵元堂 (Tetsugendō) with a gold seal.
Iron tsuba of tate-maru (upright oval) shape, signed 鐵元堂 (Tetsugendō) on the seppadai, with a square seal inlaid in gold that the original seller reads as 敏行 (Toshiyuki). The original seller attributes it to Tetsugendō Shōraku, a metalworker of Yamashiro province active in the mid-Edo period and known for his scenes of ordinary people. The front depicts the meeting of a shiokumi, a seawater carrier with a yoke and two buckets, straw skirt and gold headscarf, and a woodcutter bearing a bundle of firewood on his back. Behind them rise hills with pines, a silvery disc among engraved clouds and a dark form of polished shakudō; below, waves carved into the iron are scattered with gold dots. The reverse shows a shore pine with gold-highlighted foliage, another shakudō form and a distant hill. The figures are in high takabori with inlays of gold, silver, shakudō and copper, and the straw and firewood are finished in fine kebori. The photographs show a dark, stable iron patina with no active rust and the gold intact; the polished shakudō has fine surface scratches and the central opening (ana) has copper sekigane. Dimensions per the original seller: 68.6 × 64.5 mm, 5 mm thick at the seppadai; it comes with a paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
