The piece

Tate-maru shakudō tsuba with a raging sea in takabori and inlaid gold dots, signed by Sonobe Yoshihide with his kaō; late Edo period.

Tsuba of tate-maru shape (vertically elongated round) signed on the seppa-dai 園部芳英 (Sonobe Yoshihide) with his 花押 (kaō). According to the original seller, Sonobe Yoshihide was born in Bunka 3 (1806), trained in the tradition of the Gotō school through the Yoshiaki line, worked in Edo and was known for highly precise landscape designs. The theme is 波濤 (hatō), the waves of the sea: the photographs show the whole field on both faces carved in takabori with fine, regular wave lines, crests breaking into foam and a large whirl at the top, which the seller reads as a whirlwind. The ground is scattered with inlaid gold dots (ten-zōgan) of varying sizes. The metal is black shakudō; the rim bears fine vertical striations. It measures 69.4 × 63.2 mm, 6.2 mm thick at the seppa-dai, according to the seller. In the photographs the carving is crisp and the gold dots are intact; the seppa-dai shows light mounting marks and the central ana carries sekigane. The seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and a special kiri-wood box; the listing does not mention a hakogaki.
