The piece
Nine-piece set of fittings for a daishō pair with carp in shakudō nanako and gold, signed by Sonobe Yoshitsugu and designated Jūyō Tōsōgu by the NBTHK.
Complete set of fittings for a daishō pair, titled on the paper 遊鯉図揃金具 (yūri-zu soroi kanagu), "set of fittings with playing carp". It is the work of Sonobe Yoshitsugu, an Edo metalworker of the late Edo period: according to the paper he trained in a workshop of the Gotō line, was adopted by his master, and in 1813 returned to his own surname and founded the Sonobe school. The set comprises nine pieces: the two tsuba, the two fuchi-kashira, a kozuka and the two pairs of menuki. All are shakudō with a nanako ground, carp in takabori and gold iroe accents; the hitsu-ana of the tsuba are filled with gold, the reverse of the tsuba carries plant motifs in gold and the back of the kozuka is gilt. According to the paper every piece is signed: the large tsuba 濤窓芳継鐫 (Tōsō Yoshitsugu sen), the small one 薗部芳継鐫 (Sonobe Yoshitsugu sen), the fuchi-kashira and kozuka with signature and kaō, and the menuki with the characters 芳・継 (Yoshi · Tsugu). The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōsōgu at its 62nd session on 18 October 2016, and its description calls it a masterpiece. In the photographs the shakudō keeps a deep black and the gold is intact.
