Description
A futatokoro, a matching kozuka and kōgai, from the main Gotō line, depicting a dōran: the rectangular pouch worn at the waist to carry medicine, seals, tobacco or coins, shown with its knotted cords. Both pieces bear on their gold backs the inscription 紋徳乗 (mon Tokujō) 光孝 (Mitsutaka) with kaō: an attribution (kiwame) by which Gotō Mitsutaka, thirteenth head of the family, recognised the design as the work of Gotō Tokujō (1550–1631), fifth head of the house. The ground is shakudō with fine, even nanako; the pouch is carved in shakudō takabori with touches of gold iroe, and the gold cords carry fine chiselling imitating the braid. Rims and backs are gold with a hairline finish. The photographs show crisp nanako, intact gold and only slight wear on the high points of the pouch on the kozuka. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper (no. 2010490, 26 March 2024) describes the set as shakudō nanako-ji, takabori and iroe, and records the inscription above.
