The piece
Openwork iron tsuba signed 江州彦根住兼義作 (Gōshū Hikone-jū Kaneyoshi saku), with warriors, horses and boats among waves beneath an old pine, in takabori with gold, silver and copper iroe.
Round iron tsuba by Kaneyoshi, a craftsman of the 彦根彫 (Hikone-bori) school, active in Hikone, Ōmi province. The signature, 江州彦根住兼義作 (Gōshū Hikone-jū Kaneyoshi saku), reads clearly in the photographs, chiselled in two columns on either side of the central opening. The original seller titles the piece 弓流 (yumi-nagashi), the Genpei war episode in which Minamoto no Yoshitsune retrieves the bow he dropped into the sea. On the front, an old pine in openwork fills the upper field; below it, armoured warriors, horses and boats among waves in takabori, with silver and copper faces and armour picked out in gold (iroe). The scene continues on the back with a copper-faced warrior, a boat and chiselled waves dotted with gold. The mist bands carry fine inlaid gold lines and the hitsu-ana are outlined in gold; one of them is closed with a shakudō plug. The photographs show iron with a dark, stable patina, no active rust, well-preserved gold and light wear on the high points. Dimensions according to the original seller: 73.5 × 70.7 mm, 4.9 mm thick at the seppa-dai, 104 g. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which is not photographed.
