The piece

Iron tsuba of the Hazama school, signed 間 (Hazama), with kaji leaves and broken fans in sahari zōgan heightened with gold; mid-Edo period.

Iron tsuba of marugata, almost perfectly round form (78 × 77 mm and 5.5 mm thick at the seppa-dai, according to the original seller), signed 間 (Hazama) beside the central opening on the reverse, as the photographs show. The Hazama workshop descended from the Kunitomo gunsmiths of Ōmi, who carried the inlay technique of matchlock barrels over to sword guards; some of its members served the Matsudaira of Kameyama in Ise province. The plate, of dense, well-forged iron, is shaped into eight facets radiating from the centre. The subject is 梶葉紋破扇図 (kaji-no-ha-mon yabure-ōgi zu): on the obverse three kaji leaves treated as a crest, on the reverse broken fans and sprigs. The motifs are worked in sahari zōgan, an alloy of copper, lead and tin melted into the recess, with its characteristic pitted surface, combined with gold hira-zōgan at the leaf tips and in the sprigs. The photographs show a dark patina with brown spots of surface rust on the iron, the gold intact with fine scratches, and white-metal sekigane in the central opening. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and a custom-made paulownia box.

Points to bear in mind

  • The paper is not photographed: it rests on the original seller's statement
  • Brown spots of surface rust on the iron
  • White-metal sekigane in the central opening
  • Pitted sahari surface, inherent to the technique, with some small losses
