The piece
Suaka kozuka with a nanako ground and shakudō takabori figures with gold iroe depicting Kōsekikō and Chōryō, signed on the end by Noriyuki of the Hamano school.
Kozuka signed 矩随 (Noriyuki) on the end (kojiri-mei), a signature clearly legible in the photographs. Noriyuki was the leading pupil of Hamano Shōzui and one of the great names of the Hamano school of Edo, known for his scenes of historical and legendary figures from China and Japan. The front plate, of suaka (copper) with a fine and very even nanako ground, shows in high relief (takabori) the old man Kōsekikō seated on rocks and the young Chōryō prostrate before him with a sheathed sword: the Chinese legend of the disciple who learns patience and strategy. The figures are of shakudō with gold iroe details, and the faces are chiselled with great finesse and expression. The back is plain suaka. According to the original seller it measures 97 × 14 mm and comes with a paulownia box. In the photographs the nanako is crisp and the gold well preserved; only small surface marks from use are visible on the back. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which is not photographed.
