The piece
Shakudō nanako kozuka with a Hōrai mountain landscape in takabori, gold pines and silver birds, signed by Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the main Gotō line.
Kozuka signed by Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the main line of the Gotō school, born in 1628 and in the service of the shogunate, who divided his activity between Kyōto and Edo. The subject is a landscape in the Hōrai spirit: mountains by the shore, pines in the foreground and birds in flight over the peaks. The ground is black shakudō finished in fine, even nanako; the mountains rise in softly modelled takabori, the pines have gold crowns and the birds are rendered in silver, in iroe. The back plate is entirely of gold, with a diagonal tool texture and the engraved signature with kaō. The photographs show the piece in very good condition: crisp nanako, no visible wear on the relief and the gold and silver intact. It measures 96.2 × 13.5 mm according to the original vendor, who states that it comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and in a special kiri-wood box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
