The piece

Matching kozuka and kōgai in shakudō with nanako ground, carved with a naruko and a sparrow in gold and silver relief; NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributing them to the Kyō-kinkō school.

Futatokoro, a matching kozuka and kōgai, unsigned, attributed by the NBTHK paper to the Kyō-kinkō school, the Kyoto metalworkers of the Gotō tradition. The theme, 鳴子に雀図 (Naruko ni suzume-zu, "naruko and sparrows"), shows a naruko —the clapper of wooden slats shaken with a rope to scare birds from the rice fields— and a sparrow taking flight: on the kozuka the bird in gold above the naruko with its silver cord; on the kōgai the naruko alone with its coiled rope. The plates are shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground, carved in takabori with gold and silver iroe, as the paper summarises: 赤銅魚子地高彫金銀色絵 (shakudō nanako-ji takabori kin-gin iroe). The reverses are divided diagonally between a gilt field and polished shakudō. The photographs show an even black patina and well-preserved gilding on the carving; the reverses have fine wear scratches and some rubbing of the gold. Dimensions according to the original seller: kozuka 9.7 cm, kōgai 21.2 cm. Accompanied by NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu) paper no. 2001714, dated 1 July 2014.

Strong points

  • NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper (no. 2001714, 2014)
  • Complete kozuka and kōgai pair sharing one theme
  • Shakudō with fine, even nanako
  • Takabori with gold and silver iroe
  • Kyō-kinkō school, in the Gotō tradition

Points to bear in mind

  • Unsigned: a school attribution, not a named maker
  • The paper gives no period; late Edo is inferred from style
  • Fine wear scratches and rubbed gilding on the reverses
