The piece
Round tsuba of polished shakudō signed 英精 (Eisei) with kaō, showing hares beneath susuki grass carved in katakiribori, in the Yokoya school tradition.
Round (marugata) tsuba of shakudō with a polished (migaki) ground, signed 英精 (Eisei) beside the central opening and followed by his kaō. Eisei worked in the line of the Yokoya school of Edo, renowned for katakiribori, the single-stroke chiselling that imitates the brushstroke. The photographs show on the obverse two hares leaping beneath stalks of susuki (obana) swaying in the wind; the plumes are rendered in fine kebori and the stalks in lines of changing width that bring movement to the whole surface. According to the original seller, the reverse depicts chidori over a rough sea, the piece has a gold fukurin and measures 81.2 × 80.5 mm, 4.2 mm thick at the seppa-dai; it is kept in a fitted paulownia box. The black patina of the shakudō looks even, with no visible rust or knocks and only light handling wear. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
