The piece

Iron fuchi-kashira signed Shōzui, showing a scholar reading by moonlight in takabori with gold and silver inlay; mid-Edo period.

Fuchi-kashira signed 政隨 (Shōzui) on the base plate of the fuchi, attributable by its signature to Hamano Shōzui, founder of the Hamano school of Edo. The theme is reading by moonlight: on the kashira a scholar in profile, holding a scroll, appears at the mouth of a bamboo-covered grotto; his robe bears phoenixes in gold, while his face and hand are in silver. The original seller suggests the figure may be the poet and calligrapher Su Dongpo. The fuchi completes the scene with snow-laden rocks in silver, bare trees and rippling water on one side, and a full silver moon among golden grasses on the other. The iron ground is cut back and worked in takabori, with zōgan and iroe in gold and silver; according to the original seller the shitodome are solid gold. Stated dimensions: kashira 33.2 mm, fuchi 37.8 mm, fuchi height 12.7 mm. The photographs show a dark, stable iron patina with no active rust and the inlays intact. It comes in a fitted paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
