The piece

A kozuka and a pair of menuki sharing the shishi theme: the shakudō nanako kozuka with a gold shishi attributed to Gotō Teijō, the solid gold menuki to the Gotō school. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.

A futatokoromono made up of a kozuka and a pair of menuki united by the same motif, the shishi (guardian lion). The kozuka has a very even shakudō nanako ground with a gold shishi applied in high relief, treated as a heraldic emblem. On the ura, a gold plate filed in diagonal strokes, the photographs show the attribution inscription of Gotō Mitsuyoshi, a later head of the Gotō family, assigning the piece to Gotō Teijō, ninth generation of the main line, son of Kenjō and one of the most gifted metalworkers of the family. The menuki are of solid gold, carved in katachibori as complete shishi with finely worked manes and tails; they are unsigned and attributed to the Gotō school, by a different hand from the kozuka. The condition is good: the nanako is intact, the gold preserved, with only light wear on the high points of the menuki. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu paper of 2017, no. 2003992, records the kozuka as Teijō through Mitsuyoshi's inscription and the menuki as Gotō. The kozuka measures 9.70 × 1.49 cm. According to the original seller, it is kept in a kiri box.

Strong points

  • Kozuka attributed to Gotō Teijō, ninth generation of the main Gotō line
  • Attribution inscription by Gotō Mitsuyoshi on the ura
  • Solid gold menuki carved in katachibori
  • Very even shakudō nanako ground
  • NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu paper (2017)

Points to bear in mind

  • The kozuka inscription is an attribution by a later Gotō head, not Teijō's own signature
  • The menuki are by another hand and the paper attributes them only to the Gotō school
  • The set pairs a kozuka with menuki rather than the usual kozuka and kōgai
  • The photographs are few and of medium size
