The piece
Oval shibuichi tsuba signed by Saitō Saneyoshi of Mito, depicting Chitasei Go Yō, the strategist of the Suikoden, beside a celestial globe beneath a golden starry sky.
Oval shibuichi tsuba with a twisted-rope rim, signed on the obverse 齋藤真義 (Saitō Saneyoshi) with kaō. Saitō Saneyoshi was a metalworker of the Mito school, known for historical figures carved in high relief with a realistic touch. The obverse shows Chitasei Go Yō, the strategist of the Chinese novel Suikoden, able to read the movements of the heavens: standing, with a finely worked face and beard, his robe chiselled with golden clouds, beside a silver celestial globe held up by gilt figures and an astronomical measuring instrument. Constellations in gold dots and lines cross the ground. The reverse shows pine branches and a rock with ivy in gold leaves and silver tendrils. Worked in takabori with iroe of gold, silver, copper and shakudō, together with zōgan and kebori. According to the original seller it measures 63 × 56.4 mm, 4 mm thick at the seppadai, and comes with a custom-made paulownia box. The photographs show an even patina, complete inlays and light handling wear around the seppadai. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
