The piece
Iron tsuba with a yakite-kusarashi surface, roundel crests and karakusa scrolls in low relief, signed by Umetada Shigenaga and carrying NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Iron tsuba of tate-marugata shape (an upright oval) with a rounded rim (maru-mimi), signed on the front 西陣住人 埋忠重長 (Nishijin-jūnin Umetada Shigenaga). Umetada Shigenaga worked in the Nishijin district of Yamashiro province within the Umetada school; the original seller places the piece around the Kanbun–Enpō eras (1661–1681). The plate shows the yakite-kusarashi surface typical of the school: iron deliberately burnt and corroded to produce a rugged, organic texture. Across it, in very low relief, are family crests set in roundels — described by the original seller as maru ni mitsu-kashiwa, three oak leaves within a circle — linked by karakusa scrolls running over both faces. The photographs show a stable black patina with a few isolated brown specks, copper sekigane at both ends of the central opening and fine file marks on the seppadai. According to the original seller it measures 7.82 × 7.53 cm, 0.43 cm thick at the seppadai, and weighs 113.8 g. It is accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu certificate dated Reiwa 3 (2021), which accepts the signature.
