The piece
Oval tsuba of polished shibuichi, signed 本山敬英 (Motoyama Takahide) with kaō, showing Jurōjin and a deer beneath a pine in takabori with gold iroe. Late Edo.
Tsuba of elongated oval form in shibuichi with a polished surface, signed on the front 本山敬英 (Motoyama Takahide) followed by his kaō. According to the original seller, Motoyama Takahide worked in Hizen province in the late Edo period and was a pupil of Jiritsusai Tomohide. The front depicts Jurōjin, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, standing beneath a pine with a deer at his side: the face, beard and wrinkles are chiselled in fine detail, the headdress is in black metal and the robe carries floral motifs of inlaid gold. The pine branches, in white metal with gilt cones, fill the upper part, and a ground line in kebori crosses the plate. The back continues the scene with another pine branch and gold-leaved bamboo beside a rock. The photographs show a healthy patina, with some brownish stains on the back and a small red mark on the front; the hitsu-ana is closed with a black filling. It comes in a paulownia box whose lid bears the maker's name and the subject. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. Dimensions according to the seller: 70 × 63.5 mm, 4.8 mm thick at the seppa-dai.
