The piece

Polished shakudō tsuba with New Year decorations (shōgatsu-kazari), signed 如柳 (Joryū) with his kaō, a pupil of Murakami Jochiku.

Tatemaru-gata tsuba, slightly taller than wide, in shakudō with a polished ground (migaki-ji), signed on the front 如柳 (Joryū) followed by his kaō. Joryū was a pupil of Murakami Jochiku and worked in Edo in his master's manner. The theme is the New Year decorations (shōgatsu-kazari): on the front, a spiny lobster in copper takabori with touches of iroe and very fine kebori, beneath a shimenawa with its shide in gold hira-zōgan and pine branches in gold and silver; on the back, bamboo with its leaves, a manryō branch with red berries, and dried chestnuts and kaya nuts in gold and copper relief. The photographs show a deep black shakudō with light surface scratches, slight wear on the seppa-dai and some greenish areas in the patina of the back; small sekigane sit beside the central opening. Dimensions stated by the original seller: 70.5 × 67.2 mm, 5 mm thick at the seppa-dai. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and a custom-made paulownia box.
