The piece

Round iron tsuba signed 貞栄 (Teiei), of the Hazama school, inlaid in sahari with concentric rings and cherry blossoms on the front and a sailing boat on the back.

Iron tsuba of marugata (round) form, signed 貞栄 (Teiei) beside the central opening. Teiei is the most representative name of the Hazama school (間派, Hazama-ha), known for its inlay of sahari (砂張), a whitish copper-tin alloy whose technique is traditionally said to derive from the decoration of firearms. The original seller states that Teiei, a native of Kunitomo village in Ōmi, worked in Ise Kameyama, Yamashiro and Shimōsa following his lord, and dates the piece to the middle of the Edo period. The photographs show groups of concentric rings and two cherry blossoms drawn in sahari line on the front; the back, with a different design as is usual in the school, depicts a sailing boat (hokakebune) with mast, yard and rigging in broad strokes. The shrinkage of the molten metal leaves small irregularities and pores in the lines, which give the technique its character. The iron shows a dark, brownish-black and stable patina with no visible active rust; there is a gap along the inner edge of one of the upper rings. According to the listing it measures 81.4 × 81.4 mm, 4.5 mm thick at the seppa-dai, and it is kept in a fitted paulownia wood box with a lined bed. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
