The piece
Shakudō kozuka with a nanako ground and rope-bound farming tools in takabori with gold and silver iroe, attributed to Gotō Eijō by the appraisal inscription of Gotō Mitsumori.
Kozuka attributed to Gotō Eijō (1577–1617), sixth master of the main line of the Gotō family, active in Kyoto during the Momoyama period. The attribution does not rest on an autograph signature: the reverse bears an engraved appraisal inscription, 栄乗作 光守 (Eijō saku Mitsumori) with kaō, by which Gotō Mitsumori, fourteenth master of the house, recognised the work as Eijō's. The subject, titled by the original seller 縄張農具図 (nawabari nōgu-zu), gathers farming tools tied with a rope: a long wooden shaft showing its grain, a sickle with a silver cutting edge, and grass stems in the background. The photographs show a fine, regular nanako on deep black shakudō, the composition in takabori with gold iroe on the rope and two stems and silver on the sickle; the reverse is polished shakudō (migaki). The condition visible is good: dark, even patina, crisp nanako and intact gilding, with fine wear scratches on the reverse. According to the original seller it measures 96 × 14.5 mm and is kept in a paulownia box with a fabric lining; the seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper that does not appear in the photographs.
