The piece

Shakudō kozuka signed 友保 (Tomoyasu) with kaō, decorated with three aubergines in translucent gold-wire shippō enamel, in the Hirata school tradition.

Kozuka signed 友保 (Tomoyasu) with kaō, attributed by the original seller to Ryūrinsai Tomoyasu, a craftsman working in the shippō enamel tradition of the Hirata school. The front, in shakudō with an ishime (stone-textured) ground, shows three aubergines with their leaves in gold-wire shippō: translucent purple, blue, green and yellow glass, with graded colours and tiny bubbles trapped in the mass that give the motif depth. The polished shakudō back (migaki) carries the chiselled signature. According to the original seller, the piece dates from the late Edo period and measures 96.2 × 14.5 mm. The photographs show good overall condition: an even black patina, complete enamels, some fine crazing in the glass of one aubergine and small brown rust specks at the edge of a few inlays. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu certificate and a fitted paulownia box; neither the certificate nor the box appears in the photographs.
