The piece

Iron tsuba signed by Yukimitsu of Hagi, Chōshū school, carved in high relief on both faces with autumn plants. Late Edo; Tokubetsu Hozon paper declared by the original seller.

Iron tsuba of kaku-maru shape (a square with rounded corners), with a single hitsu-ana. It bears the signature 長州萩住幸光作 (Chōshū Hagi-jū Yukimitsu saku), chiselled in two columns on the seppadai of the front face. Yukimitsu, of the Isobe family, worked in Hagi, Nagato province, within the Chōshū school, known for precisely carved plant compositions; according to the original seller he left dated works from the Bunkyū to the Keiō eras. The theme is akikusa, the grasses and flowers of late summer and autumn: susuki, nadeshiko, asagao with its tendril, clusters of granular-textured blossoms and heart-shaped leaves, spread over both faces like a flower arrangement. The photographs show high-relief takabori with crisp edges on a flat ground, the veins of leaves and petals engraved in fine line (kebori), without inlays of other metals. The patina is dark brown and stable, with lighter mottling on the reverse. Dimensions according to the original seller: 76.5 × 70.4 mm, 4.8 mm thick at the seppadai. It comes in a fitted paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (tokubetsu hozon tōsōgu) paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
