The piece

Iron mokkō tsuba signed 佐嘉住乗道 (Saga-jū Jōdō) with kaō: a woodcutter returning home at dusk on the front and homecoming geese on the back, in takabori with gold and silver.

Iron tsuba of the Saga school in Hizen province, signed on either side of the central opening 佐嘉住乗道 (Saga-jū Jōdō) followed by the maker's kaō, a signature the photographs show clearly. The plate is of mokkō shape, with a turned-over rim (uchikaeshi-mimi) and a hammered, undulating surface that gives it a rustic air. The front shows a mountain path at dusk: an inlaid moon between two peaks, a pagoda among rocks, a resting traveller and a woodcutter heading home with two bundles of firewood on his shoulder (the Kishō theme, 'the woodcutter's return'). The back depicts homecoming geese over reeds and a shoreline, a scene which, according to the original seller, follows a sliding-door painting attributed to Oguri Sōtan. The carving is in takabori with gold and silver accents and waves in kebori; the original seller relates it to the style of Kaneie. It measures 80.3 × 76.7 mm, 4 mm thick at the seppadai. The photographs show a dark brown iron patina, stable and free of active rust, with the gold inlays intact. It comes in a kiri box with an inner frame. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
