The piece
Shakudō nanako kozuka with falconry gear in takabori with gold and silver, attributed to Gotō Sokujō by Gotō Mitsutaka's inscription on the back plate.
Kozuka from the main line of the Gotō school, attributed to the eighth master, Gotō Sokujō. The gold back plate bears the engraved attribution 紋即乗 光孝 (Mon Sokujō Mitsutaka) with kaō: it is the thirteenth master, Mitsutaka, who assigns the work to Sokujō; it is not the maker's own signature. The face is deep black shakudō with fine, very even nanako. On it, in takabori with gold and silver iroe, rises a motif of falconry gear: a braided cord with tassels, which the original seller identifies as the ōo, the falcon's leash, looped with a curved silver element and a small gold pouch with a hammered surface. The bird itself is absent; the gear alone evokes the scene. The rim and back plate are gold. The photographs show intact nanako, an even black patina and well-preserved gilding, with a small mark at one end of the reverse. According to the original seller, the piece carries an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and is kept in a kiri box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
