Description
Unsigned iron tsuba attributed by the NBTHK paper to 林藤八 (Hayashi Tōhachi), third generation of the Hayashi school of Higo; according to the original seller, eldest son of the second master Shigemitsu, born in 1723 and deceased in 1791. Of tate-marugata shape (round, slightly taller than wide) with a rounded mimi, it depicts in ji-sukashi the yatsuhashi theme: the zigzag planks of the eight-section bridge over a pond of kakitsubata irises, with curving leaves and an open flower beside the seppa-dai. The two hitsu-ana take the shape of a half moon and a cloud. The lines of the planks and the details of the flower are engraved in kebori. The photographs show polished iron of a dark brown tone with a restrained lustre, stable and free of active red rust, with a clean, even rim. The 特別保存刀装具 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu) paper, dated March 2015, describes it as polished iron with openwork ground, kebori and a rounded mimi. Dimensions according to the original seller: 76.2 × 72.5 mm, thickness 5.2 mm.
