Description

Unsigned kōgai which the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributes to Jōshin, third generation of the main Gotō line: 伝乗真 (den Jōshin). The theme is bagu-zu, riding equipment: a saddle, stirrups and shiode rings arranged along the panel. The ground is shakudō with fine, even nanako; the motifs, in shakudō takabori, are gilded in the fukurokise iroe technique, with a chiselled lattice over the gold of the saddle flaps. The finial bears a gold warabite motif. The photographs show a deep black patina with no sign of repatination and light wear from use: the gold slightly thinned on some edges and small marks on the plain section and the reverse, with no dents or active rust. The original seller gives dimensions of 227 × 13.6 mm, a publication in a reference book on early kōgai and a plain paulownia box.
