The piece
Round shibuichi tsuba signed by Furukawa Jōchin, showing a travelling puppeteer and children in gold, silver and copper inlay; on the reverse, a willow beside a bamboo fence.
Round shibuichi tsuba with an ishime ground, signed 古川常珍 (Furukawa Jōchin) with his kaō beside the central opening. Jōchin was the son of Genchin, founder of the Furukawa school, who trained under Yokoya Sōmin; the school is best known for kozuka in polished shibuichi with katakiribori and kebori. On the obverse, a travelling puppeteer with his box of puppets slung from his neck laughs as a child clings to his legs; on the other side, two children dance and point. Faces and hands are in copper, details in gold and silver, and the garments are engraved in fine kebori. The reverse shows a willow with chiselled leaves and a gold-flecked trunk beside a bamboo fence hung with two silver panels. The original seller describes the carving as shishiai-bori, a sunken relief that the photographs bear out: the figures do not rise above the plane. The photographs show a dark, even patina, with no rust or knocks, intact inlays and copper sekigane in the central opening. It measures 7.42 × 7.11 cm according to the original seller, who declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper that does not appear in the photographs.
