The piece

Shakudō tsuba signed by Rakuyō Yoshimichi of the Mito school, showing the Uji-gawa senjin scene in high relief with gold, silver and copper iroe.

Tate-maru tsuba of shakudō with an ishime surface, signed on the reverse 落葉美道造 (Rakuyō Yoshimichi tsukuru). Yoshimichi was a metalworker of Mito, in Hitachi province, known according to the original seller for realistic scenes drawn from classical literature and historical figures. The subject is the 宇治川先陣 (Uji-gawa senjin), the race to be first across the Uji river between Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue, an episode of the Heike monogatari. On the obverse, the piers of the stripped bridge rise above the waves while a gilt mounted warrior rides beside pine trees; on the reverse, a stone wall with its roof and a pine overlook the water, which a rider crosses swimming with his horse. The figures are carved in very high relief (takabori) and heightened with gold, silver and copper iroe. The photographs show no knocks, cracks or rust, and the colour of the relief work is preserved. Dimensions according to the seller: 69.4 × 65 mm, 5.8 mm thick at the seppa-dai. It comes in a fitted kiri box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
