The piece

Shakudō kozuka with a nanako ground and a gold shishi in high relief, signed 宗與 (Sōyo) with kaō on the reverse; Yokoya school, mid-Edo period.

Kozuka of the Yokoya school, signed on the reverse 宗與 (Sōyo) followed by his kaō, chiselled on a diagonal gold band. According to the original seller, Sōyo, born in Edo in 1700, was the adopted son and pupil of Sōmin and became head of the Yokoya line in 1733. The face is a shakudō plate with fine, even nanako; at its centre a recumbent shishi beside a large ball and curling clouds, worked in gold takabori, with mane, curls and claws finely chiselled. The shishi was one of the school's favourite subjects. The reverse is polished shakudō, divided diagonally by the gold plate bearing the signature. The photographs show intact nanako, a deep black patina and the gold relief without losses; the gold on the reverse has fine wear scratches. Dimensions stated by the seller: 9.83 × 1.45 cm. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
