The piece
Shibuichi kozuka with Shōki engraved in katakiribori, signed 宗珉 (Sōmin) with kaō; the original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Kozuka of pale shibuichi, 9.62 cm long and 1.44 cm wide according to the original seller. On the front, the figure of Shōki, the demon queller of Chinese tradition, with his cap, beard and windswept robes, fills the lower half of the field and leaves the rest plain. The photographs show katakiribori of varying depth, completed with fine kebori lines in the beard and hair, the technique that linked Yokoya Sōmin (1670–1733) with the birth of machibori. On the reverse, with a striated finish, the engraved signature 宗珉 (Sōmin) followed by his kaō can be read. The patina is an even silvery grey, with no visible rust, dents or cracks, only light wear from use. The original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers in Sōmin's name, which do not appear in the photographs.
