The piece
Shakudō ishime fuchi-kashira signed 如竹 (Nyochiku) with kaō: a pair of spectacles on the fuchi and a hatoguruma, the toy dove on wheels, on the kashira.
Fuchi-kashira signed 如竹 (Nyochiku) with kaō, the work of Murakami Nyochiku, an Edo kinkō known for his bold compositions and for sue-mon high relief on a shakudō ishime ground. The kashira depicts a hatoguruma (鳩車), the toy dove on wheels, with a copper head, a body in coloured relief and the pull-cord inlaid in gold. The fuchi shows a pair of spectacles with a relief frame, grey-metal lenses and a gold cord; on the other side, a gold inscription read by the original seller as 白愛玉 (Hakuaitama) and a gilt disc. The signature, chiselled on the copper plate of the fuchi, is clearly legible in the photographs. The photographs show good condition: the ishime texture is intact and crisp, the gold retains its lustre and no knocks or rust are visible; the copper plate shows some dark spots from use. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper and a box with a hakogaki by Satō Kanzan dated Shōwa 51 (1976); neither the paper nor the box appears in the photographs.
