The piece
Pair of shakudō menuki carved in the round as oni and hannya masks tied with cords and tassels, signed on the edge and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
A pair of menuki described by the papers as 鬼・般若面図目貫 (oni hannya-men zu menuki): one oni mask and one hannya mask. The photographs show both masks in high relief, tied with finely engraved braided cords ending in tassels, with openwork between cord and face. The papers specify 赤銅地容彫 (shakudō-ji katabori), shakudō carved in the round; rectangular copper studs are visible on the reverse. The signature is cut into the edges and divided between the two pieces; the papers record it as 割側銘 驪・凰堂 (probable reading: warigawa-mei Ri Ōdō). The original seller attributes the work to Hamano Masanobu of the Hamano school of Edo. Condition: glossy black surface with a slight rubbing sheen on the high points and no visible knocks or cracks; greenish deposits around the studs on the reverse. Accompanied by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu papers no. 222800, dated 21 February 1997, and presented in a wooden box lined with purple cloth, with no visible inscription.
Strong points
- NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu papers no. 222800 (1997)
- Signed on the edge, signature accepted by the papers
- Shakudō carved in the round (katabori) as oni and hannya masks
- Braided cords and tassels with fine engraving and openwork
Points to bear in mind
- The papers record only the signature; the attribution to Hamano Masanobu comes from the original seller
- The reading of the signature is probable, not certain
- Greenish deposits on the reverse around the copper studs
- The late Edo dating is inferred from style; the papers give no date of manufacture
