The piece
Shakudō fuchi-kashira with an ishime ground and flat gold inlay, showing a misu blind and aoi leaves from the Aoi chapter of the Genji monogatari; signed by Kiyosada of Sendai.
Fuchi-kashira signed on the copper tenjōgane 仙臺住清定 (Sendai-jū Kiyosada), a metalsmith of the Sendai school in Mutsu province. According to the original seller, Kiyosada trained with the Ōmori school in Edo, developed a flat, refined decorative space unlike traditional Sendai inlay and, back home, served the Date house and taught many pupils. The subject, according to the seller, comes from the Aoi chapter of the Genji monogatari: on the kashira, a rolled misu blind with its cords and an aoi leaf; on the fuchi, an unrolled misu and, on the side, aoi leaves. The photographs show a shakudō ground with a fine, even ishime, the design drawn in gold wire and hira-zōgan, and a gold rim on the fuchi, the style for which the seller says this maker is known. The gold appears continuous with no visible losses, and there are no apparent knocks or rust. Declared dimensions: fuchi 37.2 mm, kashira 33 mm. The seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a fitted paulownia box.
