The piece
Oboro-gin fuchi-kashira with New Year motifs in takabori and iroe of gold, silver and shakudō, signed 東吟亭義照 (Tōgintei Yoshiteru) with kaō.
Fuchi-kashira signed 東吟亭義照 (Tōgintei Yoshiteru) with kaō, a metalworker whom the original seller places in Kyoto, Yamashiro province, at the end of the Edo period. The theme is the New Year (Shōgatsu): on the kashira, a bush warbler (uguisu) in flight above a young pine; on the fuchi, the head of a haru-goma (toy hobby horse) beside an uprooted pine (nebiki no matsu) and, on the other side, a hagoita with its shuttlecock. The ground is oboro-gin, a silvery-grey shibuichi, with a polished (migaki) finish; the motifs are carved in takabori and highlighted with iroe of gold, silver and shakudō, as the listing describes and the photographs show. The signature is read on the bottom plate of the fuchi. The photographs show the gilding of the reliefs preserved and only light marks of use on the ground. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper and a fitted kiri box; the paper does not appear in the photographs. Declared dimensions: fuchi 38.5 mm and kashira 36 mm.
