The piece

Iron tsuba on the Shakkyō (石橋) theme, signed Watabe Issei with kaō, in relief with gold inlay; a copy of a model by Gotō Ichijō.

Iron tsuba of the Aizu Shōami school, signed 渡部一誠 (Watabe Issei) with his kaō (花押). According to the original seller, Issei trained in Aizu in the precise relief work of the local Shōami and completed his studies in Edo under Funada Ikkin, a leading pupil of Gotō Ichijō, before setting up on his own in his native Aizu-Wakamatsu. The seller describes the piece as an utsushi of a tsuba by Gotō Ichijō with the same subject and the same dimensions. It depicts the nō play Shakkyō (石橋): on one face a long stone bridge fades into the clouds, with a gold shishi on it gazing into the distance; on the other, misty mountains, rocks and water with peonies in gold blossom. Upright oval shape, tate-marugata (竪丸形), with a folded rim, uchikaeshi-mimi (打返耳); iron worked in takabori with gold inlay. It measures 84 × 79.5 mm, 3 mm thick at the centre. The photographs show an even, dark brown iron surface with no visible rust or knocks and the inlays intact; the hitsu-ana are fitted with dark plugs. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper and a fitted paulownia box; the paper does not appear in the photographs.
