The piece

A pair of chūya (昼夜, "day and night") menuki: the yatagarasu (八咫烏) facing the rising sun among clouds, signed by Yokoya Sōji and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

A pair of Yokoya school menuki signed in wari-tanzaku-mei (割短冊銘): the reverse of the sun menuki carries a plate with the signature 横谷宗次 (Yokoya Sōji), and that of the crow a second plate with his kaō (花押). The subject is the yatagarasu (八咫烏), the three-legged crow that, according to myth, guided Emperor Jinmu, set against a rising sun emerging from clouds. It is a chūya (昼夜, "day and night") pairing: the crow in black shakudō carved in the round, katachibori (容彫), with finely engraved plumage and a gold eye; the sun and clouds in shibuichi, with a gold edge, iroe (色絵), along the rim of the disc. The photographs show crisp, well-modelled carving, with sharply defined cloud scrolls. Condition is good: a few fine scratches on the sun disc and slight wear on the high points of the clouds; the gold survives. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (特別保存刀装具) paper, dated 26 June 2026, describes the piece as menuki depicting the yatagarasu, with a split signature, shakudō and shibuichi in chūya contrast, katachibori and iroe. The original seller places it in the mid-Edo period. It comes in a paulownia box lined with purple silk, with no inscription visible.
