Mōri Tōshirō

毛利藤四郎 (Mōri Tōshirō)

A tantō by Tōshirō Yoshimitsu named after Mōri Terumoto; it is listed in the Kyōhō meibutsuchō.

History

It is the work of Awataguchi Yoshimitsu, called Tōshirō, the great master of the tantō in the mid-Kamakura period, and bears his two-character signature. One side is carved with offering chopsticks (goma-bashi) and the other with a groove and its companion. The name comes from Mōri Terumoto, the lord of Aki, who owned it. It is listed in the Kyōhō meibutsuchō and is kept at the Tokyo National Museum.
