Hokke

法華派 (Hokke-ha)

The Bingo school named after its smiths’ faith: sober suguha blades, close to Mihara.

Style and characteristics

An itame jigane with nagare, of whitish, prominent appearance, and a low suguha or a suguha with small gunome; the bōshi is sometimes yakitsume. It shares the Yamato air of the Mihara school.

History

Its smiths came from the Bingo workshops and were followers of the Hokke (Nichiren) sect, hence the name; among them were Ichijō, Kaneyasu and Yukiyoshi. It worked from the Nanbokuchō to the Muromachi period. It has no connection with the family of Hokke Saburō Nobufusa of Sendai.
