Lineage: the signature does not state the generation

Profile

Katsumitsu, with the title Ukyō no Suke, is one of the main names of Sue-Bizen. In 1488 the shōgun Ashikaga Yoshihisa, campaigning in Ōmi province, summoned him, and he came to Magari at the head of the Osafune smiths and forged there: uchigatana of about 60 cm with midare tempers. A diary of the time records that the group of Katsumitsu and Munemitsu, some sixty people, came up from Bizen to the capital. The name continued for several generations, and the Yamada cutting list ranks Jirōzaemon Katsumitsu and Ukyō no Shin Katsumitsu among the good cutters.
