Taikei Naotane
大慶直胤 (Taikei Naotane)
First generation (shodai)
Swordsmith born in Dewa and trained under Suishinshi Masahide, active in Edo from 1801 to 1857.
Profile
Taikei Naotane was born in Yamagata, Dewa province, in 1778 or 1779, under the name Shōji Minobē (荘司箕兵衛). Towards the end of the Kansei era he went to Edo to train with Suishinshi Masahide (水心子正秀), and by 1801 he was working independently. From 1812 he served the Akimoto, lords of Yamagata and later of Tatebayashi. He received the title Chikuzen Daijō around 1821–22 and Mino no Suke in 1848, the year he travelled to Kyoto. He also forged away from Edo, in Osaka among other places, and often recorded the location in his signature. Starting from his master's tōran midare, he worked mainly in the Bizen and Sōshū traditions. From the age of fifty he added his age to the inscription, and in his last years he gave himself one or two years more than he had. Together with Masahide and Kiyomaro he is counted among the three masters of Edo (江戸三作, Edo sansaku). He trained many pupils; his son-in-law Jirō Tarō Naokatsu succeeded him. He died in 1857. The Tokyo National Museum holds a katana and a wakizashi by him.
