The piece

Katana by Taikei Naotane dated Tenpō 6 (1835), with a signed ubu tang, designated Jūyō Tōken at the 60th NBTHK session; kept in shirasaya with a sayagaki by Hon'ami Kōson.

Katana by Taikei Naotane, one of the great shinshintō smiths of Edo and the leading pupil of Suishinshi Masahide, whose school championed a return to Kamakura-period forging. The blade, dated the second month of Tenpō 6 (1835), belongs to what the original seller considers the smith's peak period. It is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune and chū-kissaki, with a nagasa of 71.4 cm and 2.2 cm of sori, in a tachi silhouette with pronounced koshi-zori. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tightly forged itame with abundant ji-nie and chikei, and the hamon a gunome-midare mixed with ko-gunome, chōji and pointed elements, with kinsuji, sunagashi and tobiyaki; the photographs show the undulating outline of the hamon along the whole blade. The tang is ubu, with one mekugi-ana, a kurijiri tip and sujikai yasurime; it is signed in tachi-mei 造大慶直胤 (Taikei Naotane tsukuru) with a kaō and dated on the ura 天保六年仲春 (Tenpō rokunen chūshun). It has a double habaki of gold-foiled copper. Designated Jūyō Tōken at the 60th NBTHK session, it is kept in shirasaya with a sayagaki by Hon'ami Kōson. It has no koshirae.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
