The piece

Long katana by Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Ujitsune of the Ujifusa school in Owari, designated Jūyō Tōken at the 50th NBTHK session, with shirasaya, a sayagaki by Kanzan and koshirae.

Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Ujitsune, second son and pupil of Wakasa no Kami Ujifusa, worked in Owari at the beginning of the Edo period. This katana has a nagasa of 83.0 cm, a wide blade, thick kasane and pronounced funbari. According to the original seller, the jigane is tight itame mixed with mokume and nagare, with fine ji-nie; the hamon starts in suguha and turns into notare with small gunome, pointed gunome, tobiyaki, muneyaki, ashi, yō, kinsuji and sunagashi. The tang is ubu, with one mekugi-ana, and bears the signature 越後守藤原氏恒作 (Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Ujitsune saku). The photographs show the Jūyō Tōken designation certificate of the 50th session (2004) and the corresponding page of the session book. The blade is kept in a shirasaya with a sayagaki by Kanzan dated Shōwa 31 (1956) and a gilt double habaki. It comes with a koshirae whose black saya has a stone-textured lacquer: a round copper tsuba with old coins, unsigned and attributed to Shōnai, and a copper fuchi-kashira depicting Han Kōso and Hankai in iroe, signed Mitsutoshi with kaō; both fittings hold Hozon Tōsōgu papers.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
