The piece
Katana by the fourth-generation Tadayoshi of Hizen, signed with an ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper, an Edo-period dragon-theme koshirae and shirasaya.
Katana by the fourth generation of the main Tadayoshi line of Hizen, who according to the original seller signed with the title Ōmi Daijō from Genroku 13 (1700). The tang is ubu with a single mekugi-ana and bears the signature 肥前国住近江大掾藤原忠吉 (Hizen no Kuni-jū Ōmi Daijō Fujiwara Tadayoshi), undated. The blade, in shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, has a nagasa of 71.8 cm and 2 cm of sori, a deeper curvature than is usual for the school. According to the original seller, the jigane is a very fine konuka-hada, uniform along the whole blade, the hamon a chū-suguha of fine, bright nie, and the condition perfect, without flaws. It comes with a koshirae the seller dates to the Edo period, with matching dragon-theme fittings (tsuba, fuchi-kashira, menuki and kurikata), unsigned, and a black lacquered saya with a section of kizami at the top. It includes a shirasaya, a two-piece shakudō habaki with silver foil, and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper no. 123103, issued in 1992.
