The piece

Early katana by Suishinshi Masahide dated 1787, with a Sukehiro-style tōran-midare hamon, an ubu tang signed and dated, in shirasaya and with a declared Tokubetsu Hozon paper.

Katana by Suishinshi Masahide, the Musashi smith who led the shinshintō revival. Born in Dewa in 1750, he served the Akimoto clan of Tatebayashi and forged for almost fifty years. According to the original seller, in his early period he took the Osaka shintō as his model, and this blade is an early work reproducing the tōran-midare of Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro. Shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune, standard width, a shallow 1.2 cm sori and chū-kissaki, with a nagasa of 69.4 cm. The seller describes an itame jigane mixed with mokume and areas of nagare-hada, with ji-nie, and a hamon of ō-gunome midare with somewhat angular ko-notare, thick ashi, deep nioi, abundant nie and a bright nioiguchi; the bōshi is straight with a long ko-maru kaeri. The photograph of the full blade shows that hamon of large, regular waves. The ubu tang has a kurijiri ha-agari tip, keshō yasurime with sujikai and two mekugi-ana; it is signed 水心子正秀 (Suishinshi Masahide) on the omote and dated 天明七年二月日 (Tenmei shichinen nigatsu hi) on the ura. According to the listing, it is kept in shirasaya with a one-piece silver-plated habaki, and the seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
