The piece
A long, robust katana signed 山城守秀辰 (Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki), from the early Edo period, with an ubu tang, in shirasaya and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Katana signed 山城守秀辰 (Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki). According to the original seller, the smith worked in Mino province in the early Edo period, around the Shōhō era, as a pupil of Sagami no Kami Masatsune within the Tokuin school. The blade is long and sturdy: 76.1 cm nagasa and 1.0 cm sori, with a motohaba of 3.25 cm, a sakihaba of 2.47 cm, a motokasane of 0.67 cm and a bare-blade weight of 850 g. The original seller describes a tightly forged ko-mokume jigane and a notare hamon in ko-nie, with nie-shima at the peaks and abundant yō and ashi. The photographs show the ubu tang with a single mekugi-ana and the signature on the omote, as stated in the listing. The blade comes in shirasaya, visible in the photographs, without koshirae. It is accompanied by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers, whose origami can also be seen in the photographs. The listing says nothing about the condition of the blade.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
