The piece
Hizen katana signed by the fourth Tadayoshi with the title Ōmi Daijō, around the Genroku era, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, shirasaya and black-lacquered koshirae.
Katana of the Hizen school by the fourth-generation Tadayoshi, who received the honorary title Ōmi Daijō in 1700. The original seller places it around the Genroku era (1688–1704). The blade has a nagasa of 73.7 cm and a sori of 1.8 cm, with a wide mihaba and an elongated kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is ko-itame with prominent mokume and the hamon a nie-deki gunome-midare, with a rounded returning bōshi. The tang, which the photographs show intact with a single mekugi-ana, is signed 肥前国近江大掾藤原忠吉 (Hizen no Kuni Ōmi Daijō Fujiwara Tadayoshi). It comes in shirasaya with a sayagaki repeating the signature, and with koshirae: wrapped tsuka, iron tsuba with a gold-inlaid landscape, shakudō nanako fuchi-kashira with a dragon among clouds, menuki of quails and millet, a kōgai with a kiri crest and a black-lacquered saya. Gilt habaki which, according to the original seller, may be of low gold content. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper, photographed.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
