The piece
Late-Muromachi katana of the Naminohira school of Satsuma, signed 波平純清作 (Naminohira Sumikiyo saku), with Tokubetsu Hozon papers, shirasaya and a koshirae with black ishime scabbard.
A blade of the Naminohira school, the line of smiths of Satsuma province active from the Heian period to the end of Edo; the original seller places it in the late Muromachi period. It is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, with a nagasa of 70.9 cm, a sori of 1.5 cm and a kasane of 0.68 cm. According to the original seller, the jigane is itame mixed with masame, with ji-nie, chikei and whitish utsuri; the hamon is a chū-suguha gently undulating into notare with small midare, with ko-nie, yubashiri, ashi, yō, kinsuji and sunagashi. The tang is suriage with four mekugi-ana and retains the signature 波平純清作 (Naminohira Sumikiyo saku). It comes in shirasaya together with an uchigatana koshirae: a black lacquered scabbard with ishime texture, an iron tsuba with brass inlay and a hilt wrapped in black ito over same, as the photographs show. The original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
