The piece
Shibuichi kozuka with a nanako ground and a hearthside scene in takabori and iroe, signed on the spine by Itteisai Oguri Yoshinao of the Hamano school, late Edo period.
Kozuka signed on the spine 一鼎齋小栗良直 (Itteisai Oguri Yoshinao). According to the original seller, Oguri Yoshinao was a late Edo sword-fittings maker from Echigo province who studied under Hamano Naoyuki and excelled at warriors and figure subjects. The subject, which the listing calls a figure by the hearth, is set out on two planes divided by a diagonal: on the right, a red copper figure in high relief kneels before a board, beside a silver kettle hanging from the hearth hook and a pair of gold fire tongs, on a shibuichi ground of fine, even nanako; on the left, loose sheets and fans inlaid in gold, copper, silver and shakudō, engraved with bamboo, cherry blossom and chrysanthemum. The reverse, in pale shibuichi, carries a lively procession of figures in line engraving (kebori). The photographs show what appears to be original patina, complete inlays and only slight rubbing on a few high points. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. It comes in a wooden box with a cushion.
