The piece

Eight-lobed iron tsuba with a four-warabite openwork design and gold inlay, signed 神吉樂壽 (Kamiyoshi Rakuju), with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

Tsuba signed 神吉樂壽 (Kamiyoshi Rakuju), one of the leading figures of the Kamiyoshi school of Higo, who according to the original seller worked in the service of the Hosokawa between the end of the Edo period and the beginning of Meiji, continuing the Hayashi style. The iron plate has an eight-lobed outline, yatsu-mokkō-gata (八ツ木瓜形), with symmetrical openwork of four scrolls, shihō warabite sukashi (四方蕨手透), leaving a central lozenge with two hitsu-ana, one D-shaped and one with a cloud profile. A fine gold wire inlay traces a border of lanceolate motifs that follows the edges of the openings and continues around the rim, which is square with a slight rounding. The photographs show iron with an even dark brown patina, without active rust or knocks, and the gold complete; the walls of the central opening show file marks and light wear from use. The original seller gives 7.53 × 7.34 cm, 0.46 cm thickness at the seppa-dai and 109.9 g. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper of 2021 accepts the signature and describes the piece as tetsu migaki-ji (鉄磨地), ji-sukashi (地透), zōgan (象嵌) and kaku-mimi ko-niku (角耳小肉).
